Joan Hernández Pijuan
Joan Hernández Pijuan (Barcelona, 1931-2005) is among the most notable figures in the contemporary national creative panorama. His work has been linked to currents such as expressionism, informalism, and geometric abstraction. However, the great singularity of his artistic language is to be found on the margins of artistic trends and movements. His paintings and engravings enclose the emotion inspired by nature, as if he had managed to synthesise the soul of these spaces by placing small indications onto surfaces of colour or monochromatic planes. A tenured professor at the Facultad de Bellas Artes in Barcelona, he has been awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas (1981) and the Cruz de Sant Jordi (1985), as well as receiving homage in different exhibitions, chief among which are the retrospectives organised by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid (1993) and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Barcelona (2003).
